Paul Taylor Obituary The following is a tribute read by Mike Rimmer at the funeral of Paul Taylor, son of Bert, who died aged 57 Wednesday 7th May 2008 after a long illness. P.A TAYLOR – A SAILORS VIEWPOINT. About the time that Paul was a toddler, a man in Nottingham designed a sailing boat for building in the new medium – plywood. The boat was the 12-foot Graduate. When the Taylor family joined the North Lincs sailing club a few years later, the Graduate was their choice of boat. Bert, with his boundless enthusiasm, which we know so well, bought an old caravan, which he modified so that the boat fitted inside. Bert was also happy for Paul to take over the boat a few years later. I note that at club level Paul won 13 trophies in 1966, ten in both 1967 and 1968. Away from home sailing the boat “Mr Glub” Paul caught the attention of sailors in the area by winning at Skegness, Cleethorpes and Lincoln. He also came 5th out of 134 entries with “Mr Glub” in the National Championship. Although we at Grimsby knew of Paul well enough, the class we sailed was the Enterprise – a slightly bigger boat with different followers. It was a surprise; then, to see the Taylor family arrive in Looe, Cornwall in 1969 during the Enterprise class National Championship. After watching the racing Paul with his arm (or was it his leg?) in plaster due to a football accident – bought Bill Bacon’s boat “Riot” and joined the Enterprise class. Over the next few years Riot won area championships, numerous open events and of course many awards at his club. The North area aggregate trophy “The Cock of the North”, for best performer over a seasons racing, became almost his exclusive property. Here I quote form the Daily Telegraph: - “Today’s race was won by Paul Taylor, a regular front runner in the National Championship” He owned half a dozen Enterprises over the next fifteen years or so, briefly also sailing a Miracle dinghy to runners up spot twice in their National Championship. Paul was fiercely competitive; I recall an incident in the World Championship. Paul and Andy in “Riot” collided with another competitor in a disagreement over the rules. Blows were struck then handshakes made and the race continued. Paul was dogged by ill health in later life, but as I am sure you know, he was lovingly supported by Jan, James and Clare, and of course by Bert, Andy and Muriel. So long Paul, you made your mark…in this life. Mike Rimmer

George Bowles
gained third place in Techno 7.8 at the Mumbles UKWA cup event. Sailing
in light winds but with strong currents in Swansea bay really put the
sailors through their paces at the first of the UKWA sea events.

At a recent committee
meeting it was noted that the club may be missing an
opportunity to attract 'passing trade' onto the premises (mainly hikers
& dog
walkers on the sea-defence path).
News of Zone Squad Windsurfing Easter Camp Robert Griffiths (11), Emma Labourne (11) and Max Bushell (11) attended the Easter Zone Squad Training Camp over the 26th, 27th & 28th March 2008 at Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy. There were some 50 plus Junior Zone Squad windsurfers from around England taking part over the three days of intensive sailing and classroom tuition. At the end of each day there were races against other zone participants followed by intensive de-briefs. On Thursday evening the UK’s top Olympic Windsurfer Nick Dempsey took questions from our young prospective champions. Max Bushell commented that they were honoured to meet such a windsurfing celebrity. JB Work continues on the new Culvert to regulate the level of the water, you may have seen the pipe and fittings kicking around, once this is done repair work can commence on the repair of the jetty. We will need some able volounteers to help with this (not just the same usual half dozen). You all use this jetty so why not spare a little time to put it right. Work also continues on the weed problem, the estimate is now that 80% of the bottom has now been dragged - a sterling effort from chiefly (but not exclusivly) Brian and Richard. Time will tell if this has solved the problem. Live webcam is now available below - click on the link to open in a new window. This is only a cheap camera and may not last long - however I am sure you will agree gives pretty good results for £7 ! Recording from all cameras continues in the interests of security however the cameras inside the clubhouse will not be available for general viewing. If you have any queries or concerns about the camera set up email me tim@nlsail.co.uk.
